What makes a restaurant good? Well that depends on the individual experiencing it. What makes a restaurant great? That’s a totally different story. BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery have been around for as long as I can remember. It’s a great restaurant for all sorts of occasions, from birthdays to special holidays like valentines. Let’s find out if BJ’s has what it takes to be great.
BJ’s started in 1978 in Santa Ana, California as a deep dish pizza restaurant named BJ’s Chicago Pizzeria. Upon its mass popularity it expanded to a whole chain of BJ’s along the southern coast. In 1996 they opened there first brewery in Brea, California. The whole chain was renamed to BJ’s Restaurant, Inc. Today BJ’s Restaurant, Inc. has 71 restaurants and 10 breweries in the United States.
The one that I visited was in Arcadia, California for Valentine’s Day. Like all restaurants you are greeted as soon as the host sees you. You let them know how many and you are served instantly. If there is a wait they will let you know approximately how long the wait is and hand you a wireless indicator to let you know when your table is ready. Generally they are pretty accurate with the time and the wireless indicator is very convenient. One thing I would like to investigate is whether or not they clean them… The waiting room is small, there are 2 benches that seat 4 but don’t expect to be comfortable. Standing, the room can fit I’m guessing around 30. On a busy day patient waiting customers are rewarded with small slices of their great deep dish pizzas which is very considerate of them. The wireless indicator flashes and vibrates when your table is ready, you approach the host and you are shown to your table. After being seated you’re greeted by your server and are asked for drinks and are given the menus.
Service is pretty quick. I asked for waters for me and my girlfriend and the server was back with waters within a few minutes. To many water is extremely important to some it may even be the breaking point. The cups appeared to be clean and the water tasted good to me.
I ordered the avocados egg rolls as an appetizer which seems to be a mix of sun dried tomatoes and avocados wraped in egg roll wraps then deep fried. Served with a sweet and tangy honey teriyaki sauce and garnished with purple cabbage, grated carrots and cilantro. Served extremely hot which was appropriate as the mixture of sun dried tomatoes and avocados were cold so the average temp after a few minutes was perfect. The teriyaki sauce seemed off as it is generally used for Japanese cuisine but combined with the warm and creamy taste of the tomato avocado mixture paired perfectly. So they got away with that one.
My girlfriend ordered the alfredo fettuccini with blackened chicken, and I ordered a meatloaf sandwich. The fettuccini came at the same time as the appetizer which I was a little unhappy about. Two things can come from this; 1.) They are extremely productive and timely or 2.) They are working fast and sloppily. Either way the appetizer should have came first before the meal. Because they came out at the same time her meal got cold. which to some may be a small deal but most normal people like there food hot. The fettuccini was served with a breast and 2 pieces of thin garlic bread. Nowhere in that meal was it prepared in a creative way. The fettuccini was under cooked and the chicken was over cooked. The garlic bread was ok but the texture felt like reheat to me. My meal came out about 4-6 minutes later and like always prepared very well and looked great. I’m a visual guy; the meal has to be visually appealing to gain any points with me. It is art, and should be treated like such. Anyways, the meatloaf sandwich is served with a garlic French roll at the very bottom then a fairly large piece of meatloaf topped with mushroom sauce white cheddar mash potatoes and battered and fried thin slices of onion. There are steamed veggies to the side as well which was perfectly steamed which I expect.. There just veggies. The meal itself was cooked very well; the meatloaf was tender and moist. The mash potatoes were seasoned well and the onions crunchy sweet flavor really tied it all together. One thing I did want to mention was… there was only one piece of mushroom… I like mushrooms.. I’d like more. Overall the meal and service was pretty good for that night.
What I really like about BJ’s is how inviting the environment is. The atmosphere is always high and the whole place is visually pleasing. The lighting mood is dim which gives it a very night life-like mood. Another great thing is the owner (correct me if I’m wrong) walks around during business hours and talks to his customers. Very nice man came by and asked how our meal was. Touches like that make a good restaurant great.
I definitely recommend BJ’s. If you’re stuck and you got nowhere else to go, go to BJ’s. If your lonely go to BJ’s they got an open bar filled with possible prospects. If you just broke up with your boy/girlfriend go to BJ’s and get yourself the party pizookie (pizza cookie; cookie dough baked in a deep dish pizza pan served hot with a ice cream). You can’t go wrong.
I hope my experience encourages you to make your own, go check them out and email me your thoughts; I’d love to hear them.
Thanks for stopping by.
